FURNACE

- Change air filter in the furnace. Dirty or clogged filter will prevent the furnace from reaching set temperature and eventually will result in the system to 'freeze' and not turn on.
- Change batteries in the thermostat. Set thermostat to 'HEAT' and fan to 'AUTO'. Set temperature above current room temperature. Note if the thermostat 'clicks' when the furnace is supposed to turn on.
- Verify that the furnace is getting electrical power. Check electric breaker panel by flipping all switches 'off' and then 'on'.
- Note a furnace error code. Most furnaces have a small window, where you should be able to see a blinking light inside. The number of times this light blinks indicates what kind of error the furnace has encountered.
- Note any other information that may be helpful (furnace does not turn on at all; turns on and then off shortly thereafter; runs short cycles; etc). Contact us for additional troubleshooting or to schedule a service visit

CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING

- Change air filter in the furnace. Dirty or clogged filter will prevent the furnace from reaching set temperature and eventually will result in the system to 'freeze' and not turn on.
- Change batteries in the thermostat. Set thermostat to 'COOL' and fan to 'AUTO'. Set temperature below current room temperature. Note if the thermostat 'clicks' when the furnace is supposed to turn on.
- Verify that the A/C is getting electrical power. Check electric breaker panel by flipping all switches 'off' and then 'on'.
- Check if the fan in the outside A/C condenser is running when the A/C is turned on.
- Check if the evaporator coil housing (right above the furnace) is cold.
- Check if the evaporator coil housing (right above the furnace) or any of lines into/out of the coil housing have frost or ice on them. If they do, the system is frozen and cannot be serviced until it thaws. To thaw the system, set thermostat to "OFF" position, and fan to "ON". Depending on the extent of the freeze, it may take a day to thaw.
- Note any other information that may be helpful. Contact us for additional troubleshooting or to schedule a service visit.

APPLIANCES

- If the appliance does not work at all (if it has a digital panel, the panel does not light up), check if the outlet is working by plugging in something that you know works (like a phone charger). Gas stoves have an electrical plug behind the stove. Undercabinet microwaves are plugged in inside the cabinet above the microwave. If you have confirmed that the electrical outlet is not working, go to the electric breaker panel and flip all of the switches 'off' and then 'on'. Check the outlet in question again to see if it is now working.
- Clothes dryer does not dry clothing anymore. Check if the lint trap is clear. Also, check if the exhaust vent that goes from behind the dryer to the outside is not kinked or bent in such a way that it obstructs the exhaust flow. You can also go outside and see if the air is coming out of the exhaust vent when the dryer is running. Modern dryers have a failsafe that prevents the gas from turning on when there is an exhaust airflow obstruction. When you turn on the dryer, (sometimes after a minute or so) you will hear a "click" which indicates that the heating process has started. This process will continue until the dryer reaches a certain temperature, and the heating will turn off. It will turn on again once the temperature inside the dryer goes down to a certain point. If you open the dryer during the "off" cycle, the temperature inside might not be as warm/hot as it is during the "on" cycle, which is normal.
- Contact us for additional troubleshooting or to schedule a service visit. Please take a picture of the appliance's model and serial number, which will usually be on the inside frame of the appliance. Example of where a stove model/serial label is.

MICE/RODENTS

- Mice infiltration into homes is very common. Most of the time it is due to food or trash being left out in the open. Keep trash outside of the house in closed-lid containers. Do not leave food out in the open in the kitchen. Mice are attracted to dog and cat food. Make sure that the area around and behind the stove and refrigerator is always clean. Mice love to hide behind the stove because it is warm and there are often food droppings there. Refrigerators have a compressor on the back that gets warm and is also a good hiding spot for mice. After the kitchen is cleaned, including the areas behind the fridge and stove, and all of the food is properly stored, you can place mouse traps or mouse poison behind the stove, fridge, and in other areas where the mice have been observed. There are many mouse traps that catch mice including self-enclosed containers with an indicator if the device has been set off, which makes it easy to catch and dispose of the mice. Rodent control companies use the same devices to catch mice as what is commonly available to consumers, and the first line of prevention or mitigation is to eliminate the food sources that attract mice.
